Waco Montessori School

Waco Montessori School History

Waco Montessori School (formerly Austin Avenue Montessori School) began in the Austin Avenue United Methodist Church in September of 1976. There was one Montessori classroom with six children amid the existing traditional school. By the spring of 1977, the number of children had doubled. Interest in the Montessori program continued to grow until, in September of 1979, the school board voted to become a Montessori school.

By 1993, it was evident that the growing school needed more space than the church was able to provide. Accordingly, in that same year, a non-profit corporation named Waco Montessori School was formed for the purpose of purchasing the assets of the school. Beginning with the 1994-95 academic year, Waco Montessori School opened the doors at its new location on Columbus Avenue. A second building was added in December 1995 to house the elementary program. Waco Montessori School continues to operate as a non-profit school that offers twelve learning environments for children between the ages of eighteen months and twelve years.
