Since 2003, our Elementary Garden program allows students to:
• Work together with teachers caring for the garden, demonstrating respect for the environment;
• Develop increased awareness of where real food comes from and the role it plays in one’s health and ability to grow; and
• Realize the connection between personal health and nature by participating in lessons and activities that take place in the garden.
Gardening at WMS integrates environmental education, sensorial learning, respect for the living world, and connection to real fruits and vegetables. We plant and harvest throughout the year and according to each season. Students volunteer to tend to the garden with an appointed teacher during the summer. You will often find fresh carrots in student cubbies for an afternoon snack, or squash and tomatoes in the teacher lounge as a “thank you” for a fun week of learning. In words, the Elementary Garden is a year-long collaborative effort, bearing fruit for the entire school community.
